NordVPN Adds Official WireGuard Config Downloads for Router Users

NordVPN has begun offering official WireGuard configuration files through Nord Account, a change spotted by a Reddit user that could sharply speed up manual and router-based VPN setups long stuck on OpenVPN.

The files remove the need for the unofficial scripts and API workarounds that manual setup had previously required. According to NordVPN's new support pages, users log in to Nord Account, select NordVPN, open Advanced Settings and choose "Set up NordVPN manually." From the Server recommendation tab they pick a server, click "Get setup configuration," select WireGuard from a dropdown menu and download the configuration file. NordVPN recommends choosing servers marked with a "Verified" badge.

The company has also published guides for importing the files into the official WireGuard application on Windows and Linux, which allows a connection without the NordVPN app installed at all. The change has not been announced, and TechRadar reported that NordVPN's blog post about configuration files still said at the time of writing that the company does not offer WireGuard files.

NordVPN introduced NordLynx, its own WireGuard-based protocol, across its apps in 2020. NordLynx uses a double NAT system so that user identities are not stored on NordVPN's servers, but it does not work with standard WireGuard clients. As a result, anyone setting NordVPN up manually was limited to older protocols such as OpenVPN.

That limitation has been a bottleneck for manual users. In TechRadar's own router VPN testing, NordVPN reached more than 950 Mbps over NordLynx but peaked at 173 Mbps on OpenVPN. Until now, the report said, the only official route to NordLynx on a router was buying one specific FlashRouters model, the Privacy Hero 2.

Enthusiasts had built their own workaround. Guides such as LazyAdmin's required installing both the NordVPN and WireGuard clients, generating an access token, extracting a private key from NordVPN's API and assembling a configuration file with PowerShell; the guide's comment section is filled with users running into script errors along the way.

With official files available, any WireGuard-capable router should be able to import a configuration and connect. TechRadar named Asus models, UniFi gateways and OpenWrt builds as examples. The publication, which already lists NordVPN among the fastest providers it has tested, said the addition makes the service a more practical option for protecting every device on a home network.
