NordVPN Brings Message Protection to iOS and Launches Free HangUp Scam-Call Blocker
NordVPN has added Call and Message Protection to iOS and launched HangUp, a free standalone iPhone app for blocking spam calls. HangUp requires only a free Nord account, not a VPN subscription.
The Call and Message Protection toolkit sits on a single screen within the main NordVPN iOS app. It works whether the VPN connection is actively switched on or running quietly in the background, according to the company. The provider has been expanding beyond the VPN for months, most notably with its Next Gen Antivirus developments aimed at traditional malware attacks. The new releases focus on social engineering, where hackers target the user rather than the device.
Message Protection is intended to counter SMS phishing, often called "smishing," which relies on panic. Scammers impersonate delivery companies, tax agencies, or banks in the hope that a user clicks a malicious link in a rush. The tool checks every SMS from an unknown sender against phone reputation databases and runs deep URL analysis and content categorization. If a text is deemed suspicious, the app sends a push notification detailing the specific threat type.
The flagged message then opens in a dedicated safe view, creating a barrier that prevents a user from accidentally tapping the malicious link while reading the text. NordVPN says it does not store the content of any calls or messages. Domininkas Virbickas, product director at NordVPN, told TechRadar exclusively that a scam only works if a person reacts before thinking and that such messages are built to rush users, whether through a failed payment, a parcel stuck somewhere, or a claim that an account has been compromised.
"We put something on the screen before that moment, a label on the call or a flag on the message. It doesn't decide for you, it just gives you a second to think. People shouldn't need to be security experts to use their own phone," Virbickas said.
HangUp is a completely standalone iOS application available on the App Store for free. It does not require an active VPN subscription; users need only sign up for a free Nord account. Once installed, HangUp screens incoming calls in real time, matching unknown numbers against known scam databases. It sorts unknown callers into categories such as scam, telemarketing, survey, or debt collection, so users know who is ringing before they answer.
Users can configure HangUp to automatically block known scams and telemarketers, meaning those fraudulent calls will never make the iPhone ring. A localized call log keeps a secure record of what was blocked and why. Virbickas said everyone gets scam calls and everyone should be able to see them coming. "HangUp is free because the quickest way to cut down the damage these calls do is to put a warning in front of as many people as possible," he said.
Both tools are live now. NordVPN said a full technical breakdown of the new features is available on its official blog. TechRadar, which currently ranks NordVPN as its best VPN overall, reported the launch.
