Nothing OS 5.1 to add official Essential Key remapping, report says

Nothing says Nothing OS 5.1 will officially allow users to remap the Essential Key, while the Android 17-based Nothing OS 5.0 beta is out on Phone 3 with a stable release in mid-October.

The Essential Key currently opens or saves content to Nothing’s Essential Space app. Until now, remapping it to other actions, such as launching the camera or toggling the flashlight, required unofficial community-built methods. Nothing fans have long asked for remapping to be a supported setting.

Nothing OS 5.0, the company’s Android 17-based software, entered open beta on the Nothing Phone 3 last week. A stable release is expected next month, in mid-October. Android Authority notes that the Nothing Phone 1 and Nothing Phone 2 will not be eligible for OS 5.0, and those models are likely to receive neither OS 5.1 nor OS 6.0.

Nothing has also started early planning for Nothing OS 6.0, which is due in 2027. The company said it intends to collect feedback from users online and in person as it shapes the next major upgrade. No concrete features or timing beyond the planned year have been revealed.
