NovelKeys releases preassembled Classic-TKL keyboard for $189

NovelKeys has started selling the Classic-TKL Underscore Edition, a preassembled retro-style keyboard, for $189, according to The Verge.

The Underscore Edition is a wired-only, gasket-mounted keyboard with an injection-molded plastic case inspired by the Realforce 86U. It features hot-swap MX sockets, full RGB backlighting, and a light bar that can be turned off, and it is fully programmable via the Via web app. Three colorways are available: clay, boulder, and lichen. Each unit ships with NovelKeys' Classic Blue switches, GMK CYL Classic Beige keycaps, a USB A-to-C cable, and preinstalled and pretuned TypePlus stabilizers.

Previously, the Classic-TKL was available only as a bare-bones kit. NovelKeys owner Michael Sickler told The Verge that the Underscore Edition aims to give the company's enthusiast customer base something they can recommend to friends and family, and to professionals who know what they want but do not want to assemble it themselves. The Verge noted that the preassembled version costs $100 more than the bare-bones kit, but the included components are name-brand. GMK keycaps alone typically cost at least $120, and a comparable DIY build using similar parts and stabilizers was priced at $276 by the reviewer in September 2024, plus an hour of assembly time.

The review unit, in clay, was praised for its smooth switches, well-tuned stabilizers, and crisp keycaps. The Verge also pointed out limitations: the keyboard offers only one keycap option and one switch option, is wired-only, and does not include extra keycaps. Despite those constraints, the report said the Underscore Edition is a well-executed, good-value choice for those seeking a retro-style tenkeyless keyboard without the DIY effort.
