Nvidia confirms DLSS 5 will reach RTX 40-series, keeps advanced controls developer-only
Nvidia says DLSS 5 will support RTX 40-series GPUs after an RTX 50 launch, while gamers will only get an on/off toggle. The news follows modders' use of leaked software on older hardware, and announced titles remain unconfirmed.
“Our current focus is on optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50 Series with model updates expected later this fall. Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series,” Nvidia said in a statement supplied by spokesperson Rajal Maharaj.
Maharaj said the company is not ready to discuss older cards when asked about GeForce RTX 30 and RTX 20 owners. “Right now the focus is of course on 50-series,” he said. “One step at a time.” Those older GPUs have been unofficially running DLSS 5 through a leaked version ported by modders, though The Verge notes the results were often “not exactly playable framerate and plenty of crashes.”
Nvidia also confirmed that for gamers DLSS 5 will be an on/off toggle, not the slider-heavy tool that modders have exposed. “The more granular artistic controls are for developers, including model selection, Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity, automatic masking and custom per-pixel masking,” the company said. It added that developers may offer their own menus with some of those controls, as other graphics technologies have done.
One change in DLSS 5 that could ease developer adoption is its ability to identify scene elements automatically. Nvidia says its AI models can recognize faces, textiles, foliage and other objects without being told what they are, and it offers semantic AI masking and engine-level masking for artists who want to target specific items such as glassware or foliage. Unreal Engine 5 has a native plugin, and Nvidia also provides SDKs.
Nvidia says the new models run on every frame with no minimum framerate threshold. The company was less specific about whether every previously announced DLSS 5 title is still on track. Asked by The Verge about announced games such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield and Resident Evil Requiem, Nvidia replied: “More games are on the way. Many developers are actively integrating DLSS 5, and we’ll share updates on upcoming titles as partners finalize their integrations.”
