Nvidia, Dell Join $200M Series A for AI Model Developer doubleAI

doubleAI raised $200M in a Series A with Nvidia and Dell participating; CTech valued it above $1B.

doubleAI has built an AI model called Maxwell that can automatically make software code more efficient and handle other tasks. The company plans to sell the model to enterprises interested in lowering the hardware usage of their AI workloads. According to doubleAI, Maxwell finds optimization opportunities by analyzing how a program interacts with the data it processes and the underlying chips. The model supports both graphics processing units and central processing units.

Processors run a machine-generated binary version of an application rather than its source code. Maxwell applies optimizations to that binary, which removes the need for developers to manually change source code and makes it possible to modify applications while they are running in production, according to the company.

doubleAI said Maxwell has already produced measurable gains in widely used software. In March, the company revealed that Maxwell had rewritten Nvidia's open-source cuGraph library to lower its hardware usage, speeding up 55% of the library's algorithms by a factor of two or more. Maxwell also created an optimized version of pandas, a popular open-source data science toolkit, improving the library's performance on the PDS-H query speed benchmark by a factor of 38. A more recent project used Maxwell to double the video generation speed of a world model called LTX-2.5.

The company said Maxwell recently broke a nearly 50-year chess record by finding a position in which 63 moves give check, compared with the previous record of 60 moves. Earlier this month, an internal doubleAI AI agent made a new discovery about graphs, mathematical structures used in software development, and paired its proof with a Lean file that makes the finding easier to verify.

The Wall Street Journal reported that doubleAI will use half of its funding round to buy 1,000 of Nvidia's B300 Blackwell graphics cards. The chips should make it easier for the company to compete with OpenAI Group PBC and Anthropic PBC, whose latest AI models are also capable of automating research tasks. OpenAI released 722 AI-generated math papers a few days ago, according to SiliconANGLE. A month earlier, an Anthropic model created a computer-verifiable version of a famous mathematical proof in a file comprising 13 million lines of code that would have taken a team of human mathematicians several years to write.
