Nvidia Nears $6 Trillion as Options Traders Eye Month-End Milestone
Options traders give Nvidia about a 50% chance of reaching $6 trillion by the end of October, CNBC reported.
Nvidia accounts for 13% of the Nasdaq-100 and 8% of the S&P 500, according to CNBC. Friday’s gain was its first record since May and put the company’s value at just under $5.7 trillion.
Based on market-maker pricing of deltas on Nvidia options expiring this week and Oct. 30, there is about a 50% chance Nvidia reaches a $6 trillion valuation between now and the end of this month, CNBC reported. The pricing implies a 13% chance it happens this week and about a 67% chance it happens between now and Dec. 18. The options market also implies about a one-in-sixteenth chance Nvidia could hit $7 trillion by Nov. 20. Based on the current share count, Nvidia would need to touch $248 to cross the $6 trillion milestone.
The rally followed a high-stakes meeting between the President and corporate executives leading “Super Intelligence,” according to CNBC. Ben Emons, managing director at Highline Asset Management, wrote in a note to clients last week that Nvidia’s buyback announcement was a bright spot. “The buyback is not just a payout but a capital-allocation event that asserts confidence in long-run AI demand,” Emons wrote.
CNBC noted that using deltas to gauge a range of possibilities means the same size move in the opposite direction is equally likely. While that is largely the case for Nvidia, Barchart data cited by CNBC show many of the stock’s call options are trading with higher implied volatility than the equivalent puts. Such call skew is a sign that traders are biased toward hedging for a rally.
