Nvidia Raises Shield TV Pro to $299.99 and Ends Standard Model
Nvidia raised Shield TV Pro to $299.99 and halted standard Shield TV production, citing memory shortage costs.
The Shield TV Pro launched nearly seven years ago with an upgraded Tegra X1+ processor, 3GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage, at $199.99. Starting October 2, Nvidia increased the price by $100 to $299.99 as a result of increased component costs, Ars Technica reported. The streaming box is the latest device affected by a memory shortage that has pushed up prices for products ranging from digital cameras to game consoles.
When Nvidia announced the Pro model in 2019, it also introduced an updated entry-level Shield TV with the same processor but 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, priced at $149.99. That cheaper option is no longer available to buyers looking for an alternative to the Shield TV Pro. Nvidia has stopped production of the standard Shield TV and will focus its manufacturing efforts only on the Pro model, according to Gizmodo.
High demand for Nvidia's other hardware, including GPUs and AI chips, has been a major contributor to the sharp increases in component and device prices over the past few years. The $100 increase may reduce demand for the Shield TV Pro. Competing streaming boxes such as the $149 Google TV Streamer are much cheaper, even after recent price hikes. But the change is unlikely to affect Nvidia's value as the company continues to dominate the AI race.
