Nvidia Raises Shield TV Pro to $299 and Discontinues Standard Shield TV

Nvidia has raised the Shield TV Pro price to $299 from $199 and discontinued the lower-tier Shield TV, citing higher memory and component costs across the industry. The company's move shows how AI-driven supply-chain pressure is affecting even older consumer devices.

According to Ars Technica, Nvidia confirmed the increase directly. "Starting October 2, SHIELD Pro will be priced at $299. The cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry," a spokesperson told Ars Technica. The Shield TV Pro first launched in 2019 at $199.99; the non-Pro model debuted at $149.99. Nvidia later discontinued the cheaper version, while the Pro now carries a $299.99 list price. TechRadar reported that the hike amounts to 50 percent from $199 to $299, or about £225 / AU$429 before tax, and said the standard Shield TV is officially discontinued.

Despite its age, the Shield TV Pro remains unusual among streaming devices. TechRadar reported it uses Nvidia's Tegra X1 system on a chip with a 256-core GPU, 3GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. It supports 4K HDR, Dolby Vision HDR, and AI upscaling up to 4K at 60fps. When the device was last updated, TechRadar's review called it its favorite TV streamer, though that assessment came at the older $199 / £179 / AU$379 price.

TechRadar reported that the component cost crisis is expected to continue through 2027 at least, making this likely to be the last Shield TV Pro model for some time. The publication also noted that Nvidia can reach gamers through GeForce Now, its streaming service available on major desktop and mobile platforms and on smart TVs from LG and Samsung. Nvidia recently revealed the RTX Spark "superchip" for laptops and handhelds, which combines an ARM processor with an integrated RTX GPU. Nvidia described it as "a new beginning" for gaming laptops and small form factor PCs, and TechRadar reported that big-name studio support already exists, though the product currently appears aimed at premium components.

TechRadar said a new Apple TV model is expected imminently, and that with the Shield TV Pro's higher price, buyers might wait before choosing their next TV streamer.
