Nvidia's latest GeForce driver causes screen flickering, fix in testing
Nvidia's GeForce driver 616.56 is triggering screen flickering and color corruption on many GPUs. Nvidia says it's testing a fix, while gamers express growing frustration.
The bug, spotted by Wccftech and flagged by Renan Maniero on X, causes white or black screen flickering and brief flashes of color corruption in certain games such as The Last of Us and Minecraft, as well as on the Windows desktop, in web browsers, and during YouTube playback, according to numerous Reddit reports.
Gamers are increasingly frustrated with Nvidia over the quality of its graphics drivers. One Reddit user said: "It's been particularly bad since Blackwell [RTX 5000] release. Just on Blackwell alone, between the whole DisplayPort 2.1 not working with HDR, screen flickering, and black screens on the initial release, it's been a complete mess." Another complained: "It is pretty shocking seeing this from a trillionaire company on a stable build. Nothing about this driver is stable."
Nvidia has acknowledged the issue on its GeForce forums and says it is working on a patch, according to TechRadar. While awaiting an official fix, some potential workarounds have been suggested. Maniero says the bug mostly affects monitors in 8-bit mode, and switching to 10-bit color may help if the display supports it. Enabling Windows Auto Color Management (ACM) is another suggestion. Other Reddit users recommend switching from DisplayPort to HDMI or disabling Multi-Plane Overlay (MPO) in Windows 11, with Nvidia providing a registry file for that. Alternatively, rolling back to an earlier driver version reportedly eliminates the problem for many.
The issue appears widespread, affecting modern Nvidia cards back to the RTX 2000 series. Users are eagerly awaiting Nvidia's hotfix to address this persistent annoyance.
