Nvidia tones down DLSS 5 ahead of its Hogwarts Legacy debut on November 5
Nvidia says DLSS 5 will reach Hogwarts Legacy on Nov. 5 with far subtler facial changes, alongside a smaller, faster model and a new Frame Generation performance mode.
When Nvidia first demonstrated DLSS 5 earlier this year, the technology was quickly described as generative AI for video games. In those early examples, a 15-year-old student in Hogwarts Legacy appeared noticeably older, and Grace in Resident Evil Requiem looked heavily filtered. Nvidia published new comparison screenshots on Monday in which the changes to faces are now as subtle as those seen in NBA 2K27, with teenagers no longer resembling middle-aged men and environmental differences similarly restrained.
Nvidia has consistently maintained that developers hold "detailed artistic control" over DLSS 5 and decide for themselves how the technology is implemented in their games. Beyond Hogwarts Legacy, DLSS 5 is also scheduled to come to Where Winds Meet late next month.
The company is separately reducing the performance cost of the technology. An October update to the neural rendering system should make DLSS 5 twice as fast on RTX 50-series GPUs and on the forthcoming RTX Spark laptops, according to Nvidia's Andrew Burnes.
"The DLSS 5 October update shrinks the footprint by 24 percent to roughly 118 million parameters while reducing 4K VRAM usage by 20 percent," Burnes said. The new DLSS 5 model is set to debut first in NBA 2K27 on October 16 and will ship by default with future DLSS 5 games.
Nvidia also released a beta update to the Nvidia app that adds a faster performance mode for Frame Generation on RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs. The revised AI model uses what Nvidia calls a faster and lighter algorithm to raise frame rates for Frame Gen, Multi Frame Gen and Dynamic Multi Frame Gen. Nvidia says the mode involves minor trade-offs in image quality and that Frame Generation performance mode should now be up to 35 percent faster.
The schedule puts the first broadly available DLSS 5 titles roughly a year after Nvidia began promoting the technology, and follows a shift toward smaller image changes than those shown in its earliest demonstrations.
Editor's Summary
Nvidia's DLSS 5 will launch in Hogwarts Legacy on November 5 with much subtler face and environment changes than its early demonstrations, followed by Where Winds Meet late next month. An October update cuts the model's size by 24 percent and reduces 4K VRAM use by 20 percent, while Nvidia also released a beta performance mode that speeds up Frame Generation on RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs.
