Off-Grid Solar Stations Can Upgrade Sheds Without Mains Wiring, Jackery Executive Says
Brady Sun of Jackery told TechRadar that off-grid solar generators can power shed lights, heaters and tools without costly mains wiring, with kit sizing and battery care key.
Sun told TechRadar that running 20-metre extension cords across damp lawns and patios creates trip and water-exposure risks, while feeding cables through open windows lets cold air into a house. "Installing a plug-and-play solar generator inside your shed creates a completely wireless, self-contained power hub — giving you mains-free electricity without the £1,000+ cost of professional electrician fees, armoured cabling, and trench digging," he said.

Because the battery has UK plug sockets built in, Sun said users can begin using it immediately without modifying the shed. He advised choosing a kit based on the devices that will run at the same time.
"Before choosing your setup, calculate the total running and peak (startup) wattage of the devices you plan to run simultaneously," Sun said. For LED strip lighting, Wi-Fi extenders, laptops or small battery chargers, which he described as a roughly 100W to 300W load, a compact 500Wh to 1,000Wh unit such as the Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 can provide quiet, reliable power. High-draw power and garden tools, including table saws and lawnmowers, as well as electric heaters, require high continuous output and substantial surge capacity. For those, Sun recommended a 2,000Wh or larger expandable system, such as the Jackery Explorer 2000 Plus v2, capable of handling 3,000W or more in peak surges.
Sun also suggested setting up a solar power station as a permanent workbench charging hub. He said flat 18V tool batteries are a major bottleneck during autumn garden upgrades and DIY projects. With solar input, he added, users can cycle through tool batteries continuously without stepping inside the house. As days get shorter, Sun advised angling foldable solar panels at 30 to 45 degrees and facing south to catch lower autumn sun trajectories. He said users should choose a power station that supports pass-through charging, which allows solar panels to feed power into the battery while the battery simultaneously powers shed lights or laptops. For wet and cold weather, he recommended feeding solar cables through a rubber grommet or sealed cable port in the shed wall to maintain weatherproofing.
Battery care is also important in an unheated shed, which can experience moisture buildup and sharp temperature drops during autumn and winter nights. Sun said the power station should always be placed on a raised shelf, workbench or cabinet rather than directly on cold concrete or wooden shed floors to protect it from dampness and dust. He also noted cold-weather charging limits. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries perform best when charged above 0°, he said, and during freezing winter spells users should insulate the setup or bring the battery unit indoors overnight to maintain optimal charging efficiency.
