Open-source KytyPS5 emulator reaches in-game status in multiple PS5 titles

An open-source PC emulator called KytyPS5 now reaches in-game status in several PlayStation 5 games, including Astro's Playroom and Tekken 8, with modified builds showing further progress.

The emulator, KytyPS5, is distributed through GitHub and currently reaches in-game status in Astro's Playroom, Crash Bandicoot 4, Hitman: World of Assassination, Uncharted 4, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Silent Hill f, Silent Hill 2 Remake and Tekken 8, the report said.

A video posted on X by user Jose Coixao shows the main menu of Marvel's Wolverine running through the emulator, in slow motion. The clip does not show gameplay, which suggests the title does not yet reach in-game status. The demonstration was run on a high-end PC with an Nvidia RTX 5090 graphics card and an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor. It is not clear whether the build used was the stock version of KytyPS5 available to the public or a modified version.

Two other results came from altered builds of the software. The YouTube channel PSXTech published footage of the Demon's Souls Remake running at 40 to 50 frames per second, reportedly using an internal or modified build of the emulator. According to the report, that game only began reaching in-game status less than a month earlier. A developer also got the Silent Hill 2 Remake running in-game on a PC using an integrated Radeon 840M GPU, working with KytyPlus, a fork of the mainline KytyPS5 emulator.

The report said it hoped work done on the internal and modified builds would eventually be folded back into KytyPS5 itself, and described the emulator developers' progress on the mainline project as significant. It also cautioned that users should not expect to emulate PS5 games on Android devices within the next four or five years at the earliest.

The PlayStation 5 remains part of Sony's latest console generation, alongside the PlayStation 5 Pro, a factor the report cited in describing the pace of emulation progress as unexpected.
