Open-source project Mira revives Spotify Car Thing after shutdown
A new open-source project called Mira restores core functions of Spotify's discontinued Car Thing device, which was bricked when Spotify shut down servers in late 2024, according to Android Authority.
The Car Thing was a dedicated streaming device for vehicles, launched by Spotify in 2021. It featured a screen for browsing Spotify content and a large knob for easy interaction, aimed at drivers with older cars that lacked support for Android Auto.
When Spotify turned off the servers, the hardware stopped working as intended. In the months that followed, users discussed hacking the device, though some cautioned that its low-end hardware made development difficult. Several open-source projects emerged in response, and the latest one reported this week is called Mira.
Mira reportedly recreates a large portion of the original functionality, offering a way for owners to repurpose their abandoned Car Thing hardware. The report did not specify whether every feature has been restored, but it described the project as part of ongoing community efforts to keep the device useful.
