OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio to Expand Rosalind Life Sciences Effort
OpenAI acquired Orchestra Bio and will add its team and technology to Rosalind, its life sciences AI model.
TechCrunch reported that Orchestra had raised about $20 million as of 2025 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria and 8VC. The startup builds AI agents that help biotech companies manage the minutiae of drug discovery operations, from tracking finances to resolving scheduling issues with clinical trials.
OpenAI says Rosalind has already won customers including Moderna and Novo Nordisk. Orchestra's agents are aimed at operational work around drug discovery, while Rosalind and Rosalind Workbench are aimed at research planning and analysis. OpenAI is placing Orchestra's team and technology into those products.
TechCrunch reported that the deal reflects a broader pattern in which major AI labs, particularly OpenAI and Anthropic, build more software for large industries such as pharmaceuticals. Startups have feared that the labs could launch competing features at any time; in this case, Orchestra is being absorbed rather than displaced.
