OpenAI Adds Open-Tab Awareness to ChatGPT Chrome Extension

OpenAI has upgraded the ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome so it can view and use open browser tabs when users tag Chrome in ChatGPT's web or desktop app, according to The Verge. The update also brings ChatGPT's full conversation history to the sidebar and lets ChatGPT Work control tabs for tasks such as filling out forms and sending messages.

In a demo video cited by The Verge, a user asks ChatGPT to compare three open tabs showing sofas the user is considering. The report lists other examples of the feature: asking ChatGPT to use details in an event brief to fill out a registration form and stop before submitting; adding vendors from open tabs into a comparison sheet with pricing, key features, and source links; comparing contractor services across all open tabs and drafting an email to the one that fits a home renovation; and filling out a form open in Chrome before a dentist appointment while adding the appointment to work and personal calendars.

OpenAI also updated ChatGPT in the sidebar. According to The Verge, the sidebar now offers "the full power of ChatGPT" and the user's entire conversation history in Chat or Work without leaving the page being viewed.

The extension further enables ChatGPT Work to "control" Chrome tabs for tasks such as "sending messages, filling out forms, or downloading files," the report says. The Verge describes this as similar to Google's Gemini-powered "auto browse" feature. The extension can also organize or group open tabs.

The upgrades move ChatGPT beyond a separate chat window and into the browser, using the context of pages already open on a user's screen. OpenAI says the tab-reading feature works when the extension is installed and when users tag Chrome in ChatGPT's web or desktop app, according to The Verge.
