OpenAI Adds Virtual Try-On and Favorites to ChatGPT Shopping Features

OpenAI launched ChatGPT virtual try-on and a Favorites library, both using its new ChatGPT Images 2.5 model.

The virtual try-on option lets ChatGPT users upload a selfie or full-body photo to see how an article of clothing or an accessory might look on them. It appears as a new “try on” button in ChatGPT’s shopping results. Users can also upload an image of an item, such as a web screenshot, and ask ChatGPT to try it on. Engadget reported that the feature can be accessed wherever a clothing product listing appears in a chat; a user taps the item, taps “Try on” and uploads a selfie and full-body photo. The same report said any screenshot of clothing uploaded by a user could theoretically be used to generate a try-on image.

The Favorites option allows users to save products they discover to a Library in the app so they can return to them later. OpenAI said saved items will appear alongside try-on images.

OpenAI described other shopping uses for ChatGPT. A user could describe a style they want to try and ask the assistant to shop for the pieces needed to complete the look. They could also upload photos of celebrities’ outfits and ask ChatGPT to find items they are wearing that are available for purchase. That move puts the assistant into territory that Pinterest and Google have dominated in recent years as sources of fashion inspiration and discovery that can convert into sales for online retailers.

The launch comes as AI assistants test consumer shopping use cases. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI previously had to pivot from an instant checkout feature that did not perform well. TechCrunch also reported that agentic AI startup Instinct began pushing product recommendations to users, but some people felt the proactive recommendations were an overreach and more like ads than helpful suggestions. Google launched virtual try-on last year, and whether ChatGPT becomes a first choice for that activity remains to be seen.

OpenAI is not an online marketplace on the scale of Amazon, but it has started taking a cut of certain transactions completed in ChatGPT through its Instant Checkout feature. It also offers ads inside chats that merchants can use to advertise products and services. Engadget noted that neither revenue source appears able to account for the amount OpenAI spends training and running its AI, though the steady rollout of shopping features over the past year suggests OpenAI believes shopping could make a difference eventually.

Engadget also reported a privacy caveat: by default, any images uploaded from a personal account can be used for training unless the user opts out.

Editor's Summary

OpenAI has added virtual try-on and Favorites to ChatGPT’s shopping features, using ChatGPT Images 2.5 to generate images from user-uploaded photos. The rollout expands ChatGPT into fashion discovery and product saving, where Google and Pinterest are established players. It also tests whether OpenAI can build shopping revenue on top of its assistant, even as prior commerce experiments and privacy defaults remain open questions.
