OpenAI Adds Visual Ads to ChatGPT Alongside Image Generation
OpenAI is adding visual display ads to ChatGPT that will appear alongside generated images, starting in the U.S. later this month, and is expanding ad measurement tools and brand suitability work.
The move follows the launch of Meta's Muse, an agentic AI app that is free to everyone and a growing competitor to leading AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, TechCrunch reported. OpenAI introduced ads earlier this year to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers and expanded them to India in August. The company now aims to attract online advertisers that want to use more visual imagery to reach potential customers. Once the ads roll out globally, advertisers will eventually be able to target ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users, according to TechCrunch.
TechCrunch noted that integrating such ads could disrupt the user experience, though that may be partly the point: the ads could push more casual users to pay for a subscription to avoid them.
Alongside the display ads, OpenAI said it is expanding its measurement tools and partner ecosystem. The ecosystem now includes click attribution solutions from AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin, as well as full-funnel advanced measurement partners Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL. OpenAI has also partnered with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic to help advertisers explore geobased experiments around ads. It said it is working on brand suitability evaluation pilots with help from DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to help advertisers better understand the ChatGPT ads environment.
Together, the steps show OpenAI working to make ChatGPT a viable ad-supported business for users on free and low-cost plans.
