OpenAI brings back five-hour limits for ChatGPT Plus users on Work and Codex

OpenAI is restoring a five-hour usage cap for ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus plans starting August 25, while Pro subscribers remain unaffected for now.

Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's engineering lead for Codex and ChatGPT, announced the change in a post on X, saying the limit will help the company smooth out compute load and keep the Plus plan generous in terms of weekly usage. He added that Plus users are relatively casual and new, and often accidentally exhaust their entire weekly allowance before getting confused, which made the previous unlimited five-hour window a poor experience.

Under the restored policy, users who hit either the five-hour or weekly limit must wait for the next reset or purchase additional credits. OpenAI also occasionally resets limits for free, while banked resets can be earned through promotions and referral offers.

During the weeks when the five-hour limit was lifted, OpenAI temporarily reset users' weekly usage early several times to celebrate milestones, including adding another million active users across the now-unified ChatGPT Work and Codex platforms.

Sottiaux said the five-hour limit will not apply to ChatGPT Pro subscribers on the $100 and $200 plans for the coming months, but he indicated that it could be introduced for them later. He did not mention any changes for Enterprise or Edu accounts, which use a separate credit-based system.
