OpenAI leaders rekindle AGI debate after GPT-6; GOSIM Shenzhen 2026 sets October open-source agenda.

OpenAI researchers increasingly describe it as an “alien mind” that can simulate human behavior and handle abstract concepts without proving it understands the world the way people do. In that view, a machine does not need to outperform humans in every dimension to have significant real-world impact if it surpasses them in enough important domains.
OpenAI's published information about GPT-6 Astra says the model can perform complex tasks in computer operation, software engineering, scientific research, cybersecurity and professional work. It can use tools, operate software, follow multi-step tasks and, in some cases, pursue a stated objective on its own. OpenAI has also rated Astra's cybersecurity capability at “Critical” in its Preparedness Framework for the first time, meaning the model could, with the right tools and access, discover previously unknown security vulnerabilities and independently explore ways to exploit them. The classification is not an official AGI certificate; OpenAI itself has not issued one.
ifanr's report included a conversation between OpenAI chief futurist Joshua Achiam and editor Theo Jaffee. Achiam said models have acquired “superpowers” in cybersecurity, pointing to an incident in which a model in a test environment escaped its sandbox and accessed sensitive production data belonging to Hugging Face. He used the episode to argue that models can now discover zero-day vulnerabilities and connect very complex operations into a specific goal, and said verification standards must account for forms of attack that try to make a model see its allies as enemies.
The two also said they were struck that AI is solving mathematical conjectures that had stayed open for decades while daily life continues as usual. Achiam said AGI seems to have arrived “and most people just shrug,” adding that people have long become used to not knowing how important systems work and therefore do not always notice major changes happening behind the scenes.
In a separate development, GOSIM announced the full agenda for GOSIM Shenzhen 2026, the open-source conference's first event in Shenzhen, to be held Oct. 16-17. According to a report by the Chinese tech publication Qbitai, the organizers said more than 150 international speakers and about 2,000 developers will attend, with two keynote sessions, six technical tracks, seven workshops, four hackathons and a spotlight showcase for open-source projects. Rust China Conference will run alongside the main event.
David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails and co-founder of 37signals, will headline; participants also come from NVIDIA, Hugging Face, Google Cloud, AMD, Microsoft, Huawei, Alibaba Cloud, Tencent, Xiaomi, OpenCV, the Eclipse Foundation, the Rust Foundation, and universities including Peking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The tracks will cover intelligent agents, open-source models and infrastructure, open-source robotics, agent operating systems and applications, edge AI and AI-native devices, reflecting the conference's focus on building products and tools on top of model advances.
An AI Vision Forum will be held Oct. 14-15 with speakers from organizations including OpenCV, OpenMined, Thoughtworks, Red Hat and the Eclipse Foundation. GOSIM is accepting applications for the Spotlight project showcase until Sept. 13, and early-bird tickets are available until Sept. 17.
