OpenAI releases GPT-6 Sol and Luna, claiming lower cost and fewer mistakes

OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and Luna, expanding its GPT-6 family after Astra. The models cost half as much via API as GPT-5.6 versions and roll out across ChatGPT Work, Codex, and the API, with Luna available to Free and Go desktop users.

According to TechCrunch AI, OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra introduced a new generation of intelligence and that Sol and Luna extend its benefits by making that intelligence more efficient and accessible. Sol is designed for complex tasks such as coding, while Luna is aimed at clerical and high-volume work with a clear goal, including summarizing documents, extracting information, or answering quick questions. 9to5Mac described Sol as suited to complex coding and agentic workflows and Luna as suited to focused, high-volume tasks.

OpenAI is cutting API prices for Sol and Luna by 50% compared with the GPT-5.6 promotional pricing. The company attributes the reduction to improvements in caching and inference. 9to5Mac reported that the GPT-6 versions use fewer tokens to run than the GPT-5.6 versions of the same class. OpenAI said it trained Sol and Luna with similar methods as Astra, bringing advances behind Astra's performance in professional work, factuality, coding, computer use, and alignment to faster, more affordable models.

On factuality, OpenAI says its internal evaluation based on de-identified real-world conversations in which users flagged model mistakes shows GPT-6 Sol makes about half as many mistakes as its predecessor, reaching Astra-level reliability at much lower cost. The company also says the new models have a lower error rate in coding. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI repeatedly claims GPT-6 Sol and Luna handle tasks substantially better than Anthropic's top models, such as Fable and Opus.

TechCrunch reported that Anthropic released a new version of Opus 5.5 just 90 minutes before OpenAI's release.

The new versions of Sol and Luna are available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for most paid accounts and in the ChatGPT API, according to TechCrunch. Luna will be available in the desktop app and for Free and Go users. OpenAI expects to roll the models out to ChatGPT, the app and website, gradually throughout the day. 9to5Mac reported that both models are rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users, while Free and Go users can access Luna in the desktop app. Availability depends on rollout and workspace settings, and Enterprise administrators must enable the new models. In ChatGPT, the models are available in Work and Codex, but not Chat.

OpenAI said coding agents have begun tackling tasks with more complexity, scope, and duration than before, and that its internal usage has grown exponentially. Valued at API prices, daily token usage has exceeded $600 for the median researcher and $7,000 for researchers at the 90th percentile. The company said the lower API prices for GPT-6 Sol and Luna give developers more room to iterate and teams more confidence to ask Codex to take on more ambitious work.
