OpenAI's ChatGPT Chrome extension can now read your open tabs and run tasks

OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome so the assistant can inspect open tabs, compare what is on them and, in ChatGPT Work, send messages, fill out forms and organize tabs.

In ChatGPT Chat, users can ask the assistant to review the tabs they have open. Engadget gave the example of a shopper comparing couches that are open in three separate tabs, asking ChatGPT to weigh them by dimensions, price, delivery time and return policy.

ChatGPT Work, the agent OpenAI built for complex multi-step tasks, goes further. According to Engadget, it can send messages, fill out forms and organize tabs on the user's behalf. A user could ask it to complete a form for a new dentist and then add the appointment to a calendar, or to read the terms of several contractors open in different tabs and draft an email to the provider that fits best.

The ChatGPT sidebar in Chrome now also has access to a user's entire history, so requests can be made without tabbing away from the page in view. OpenAI promoted the rollout in a post from its ChatGPT account on X on October 15, saying that "the full power of ChatGPT is now in your browser" and that a user's ChatGPT history sits alongside Chat and Work while they are on a site.

The extension is available on any ChatGPT plan, and OpenAI said it works in other Chromium-based browsers as well, including Microsoft Edge, Brave and Opera.

The update builds on earlier work by OpenAI in the browser. The company once had a browser of its own but retired that product on August 9. It has instead pushed upgrades to the Chrome extension, positioning ChatGPT as a more viable alternative inside the browser to Google's Gemini.
