OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra Begins Rollout, With Access and Usage Limits Varying by Plan

In regular ChatGPT the model appears under the name GPT-6 Pro and is being released for the $100 and $200 Pro plans, Business and Enterprise. Free and Go users are excluded for now, while Plus subscribers receive Astra through ChatGPT Work and Codex rather than standard Chat as the rollout reaches their accounts.

Availability may differ between Chat, Work and Codex. OpenAI says the rollout will be gradual, so an eligible plan does not mean Astra is waiting today, and the company has not specified when eligible accounts will receive it.

Pro, Business and Enterprise users who have access can open the model picker in a regular ChatGPT conversation and look under Pro for GPT-6 Pro, which is the entry powered by GPT-6 Astra. Enterprise access also depends on workspace model-access permissions.

Plus subscribers should open Work on the web or in the mobile app and select Astra from the available models once it reaches their account. In the desktop app, users select ChatGPT, switch from Chat to Work and choose Astra there. Codex users can select Astra as well, but OpenAI says the Codex CLI requires version 0.153.0 or newer. If nothing appears, even after a recent update, OpenAI suggests checking manually through Menu and Check for Updates; because Work is rolling out separately, Astra may appear on one platform before another. Users running Work with local files or desktop apps should note that messages and task context may still be stored in the cloud even when Work runs locally.

Usage allowances are another consideration. According to OpenAI, Astra can consume an allowance faster than GPT-5.6 Sol depending on the complexity of the task, the amount of context, the reasoning required and other usage settings, so a large coding assignment can use far more than a short question. OpenAI estimates that Plus users can send roughly five to 45 local Astra messages per five-hour period, the $100 Pro plan 25 to 225 messages, and the $200 tier 100 to 900 messages. Current limits and reset times appear in ChatGPT's usage dashboard.

Chat carries separate limits. On the $100 Pro plan, GPT-6 Pro shares a 50-message weekly allowance with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, while the $200 plan allows 200 GPT-6 Pro messages per week. To slow the drain, OpenAI advises reserving Astra for tasks that require it, keeping prompts focused, including only relevant files, defining the output format and length, and telling the model what reasonable assumptions it may make.

Developers can reach GPT-6 Astra through the API at a standard price of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Requests totaling more than 272,000 input tokens are charged at twice the input and cache rates, with output rates at 1.5 times the standard.
