OpenAI to Show Ads on ChatGPT Free and Go Tiers in India
OpenAI will begin showing ads on ChatGPT's free and Go tiers in India, starting with 50 brands, as the company expands its advertising business ahead of a potential IPO.
According to TechCrunch AI, OpenAI has more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users in India, a large portion of whom use the free or lower-priced Go tiers. The company said on Wednesday that it will launch with ads from 50 brands and has partnered with agencies WPP and Omnicom for the initiative. OpenAI will also introduce an ad manager next month, allowing marketers to create campaigns with a daily minimum budget of ₹725 ($7.60).
“With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape,” Dave Dugan, head of global ads solutions at OpenAI, said in a statement.
OpenAI has invested heavily in building its Indian user base. It launched ChatGPT Go in August 2025 at a price under $5 per month and even ran a promotional period making that tier free for a full year. The company also advertised its products during major cricket tournaments such as the Women's Premier League and the Indian Premier League, and recently hired Uber's India head to lead its expansion efforts in the country.
The ad rollout in India comes as OpenAI prepares for a potential IPO, expected this year or next. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company recorded revenue of $6.7 billion in the second quarter ended June 2026, up from $5.7 billion in the previous quarter. Last November, The Information reported that OpenAI aimed to reach 220 million paying subscribers by 2030, with 35 million users then paying for its Plus and Pro plans.
