OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Spaces, a Shared Workspace Where People and AI Edit Together

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Spaces at DevDay, a shared workspace that replaces the Library tab for Pro, Business and Enterprise users and lets colleagues work alongside ChatGPT, Codex and the new Dots agents on live documents.

According to TechRadar, Spaces replaces the Library tab for Pro, Business and Enterprise users on desktop, mobile and the web. Android Authority reported the same three tiers are first in line, with presentation and spreadsheet tools, called Slides and Sheets, promised later. OpenAI describes Spaces as a home for the pages and files users create, upload and share in ChatGPT, spreadsheets and presentations included.

The centerpiece of the launch is a new document type called Pages, which combine text, images, charts and other interactive tools. Android Authority said Pages support files and comments as well as assistance from ChatGPT, Codex or Dots. TechRadar reported that Pages are intended to stay current rather than being generated once and then edited by hand, with connections to apps such as Slack, email and calendars keeping the data inside them up to date.

Spaces was announced alongside the GPT-6.1 Sol model and OpenAI's always-on Dots agents, according to Android Authority. The same report said each user has a personal ChatGPT and, where applicable, a Dot to interact with, so individuals can ask the AI to make changes or refresh material. Projects will continue to exist separately for chats, files and project instructions.

TechRadar reported that a meeting plugin is in development and is available in beta to Pro and Business users through the desktop app only. It creates private, personalized notes and suggests follow-ups inside a shared Space that colleagues can access.

OpenAI has not set out to replace Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, TechRadar reported, though it noted that Spaces changes where workers keep documents by putting files, colleagues and AI in one place. Android Authority framed the launch as an attempt to end the cycle in which users brainstorm in ChatGPT, paste the output into a document, gather feedback from coworkers and then return to the chatbot for another round of edits.
