Pebble opens developer preview of plug-in support for its OS

Pebble has launched a developer preview of plug-in support for its OS, enabling apps and watch faces to use headless add-ons.

The plug-ins are headless apps that can provide data such as weather, finance and traffic information, or offer actions such as home control, music playback and webhooks, according to the report. They are designed to serve other apps, watch faces and the Index agent. Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky announced the developer preview in a social media post and described plug-ins as similar to Apple Watch complications but "way more flexible and awesome," TechRadar reported. He also called the update "the biggest change to the SDK since... forever."

TechRadar reported that the system could route requests such as "what's on my calendar?" or "unlock the front door" to plug-ins instead of requiring each app to handle those functions itself. The report said the approach is expected to lead to more useful watch faces, more versatile and easier-to-operate apps, greater consistency between apps, and improved privacy, because permissions can be configured for individual plug-ins.

Plug-ins are available now as a developer preview, with no date set for general availability. TechRadar reported that third-party apps and watch faces are expected to begin using them as developers become familiar with the system. The report said the introduction is a sign of a platform and ecosystem that is maturing and ready to develop further.

Pebble first appeared in 2013 and returned in 2025, according to TechRadar. The report said the return was widely welcomed and described the plug-in release as a step forward for the Pebble 2.0 project. TechRadar also said the platform has had ups and downs over the 13 years since its debut.
