Pentagon launches custom ChatGPT and Grok for military use

The Pentagon has launched custom versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok for 3 million personnel via GenAI.mil, offering secure access to generative AI tools tailored for warfighter needs.

GenAI.mil initially offered Google Gemini and is designed to give Department of Defense employees access to commercial frontier AI models without routing sensitive government data through ordinary consumer channels. The official military versions are exempt from the data collection typically embedded in consumer tech products. According to the Defense Department, the portal has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users out of its 3 million personnel.

ChatGPT Mil, developed under OpenAI's OpenAI for Government program, offers a familiar experience to commercial ChatGPT users, focusing on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, according to the Defense Department. It will support document-heavy, routine unclassified work such as administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy, with additional features to be added over time.

Grok's capabilities were framed in broader, more militaristic terms by the Pentagon. "Starshield AI's Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration," the Defense Department said in a press release. Starshield AI is SpaceX's secure satellite network that uses the company's Starlink technology. The department added that Grok would allow the military "to execute missions faster and with greater precision across numerous operational contexts, ranging from market research analysis for acquisition professionals to supply chain management for logisticians."

These additions are part of the Pentagon's wider effort to leverage AI tools to accelerate work and gain an edge without compromising security. They also highlight the absence of Anthropic's Claude model, as Anthropic was labeled a supply-chain risk by the Trump administration after it refused to give the Pentagon unrestricted use of its AI tools and insisted on safety guardrails. Anthropic is currently fighting that designation in court. The Pentagon has also struck deals with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI to boost its AI capabilities.
