A Percona report says 97% of US database administrators run obsolete software, with cost, complexity and migration risk slowing upgrades even as security risks grow.

Percona warns that updating a production database is not a simple software patch. It can require a full cross-stack migration involving other software and subscriptions, and the report says the project can be so large and risky that it may introduce more operational risk than continuing to run unsupported software.

Cost is a leading obstacle. Engineering time, testing, infrastructure changes and cloud changes all add to the total cost of change. In the survey, 31% of respondents named cloud costs as their biggest barrier to reducing the total cost of ownership of their database estates. Licensing costs were cited by 23%, tool sprawl by 17% and vendor lock-in by 12%.

The report points to MySQL as an example. It says the architectural changes in MySQL 8.0 made upgrading from 5.7 a technical nightmare for users. Such examples help explain why organizations delay migrations even when they know the software is no longer supported.

Remaining on unsupported database management software creates security risks. Databases often hold an organization's most valuable and confidential information, so running obsolete systems can expose sensitive data to vulnerabilities that no longer receive patches.

There are operational reasons to upgrade as well. Among Percona's respondents, 42% cited inefficiency as a current drawback. Downtime was named by 40% and latency by 35%.

The report's suggested first step is for companies to plan their migrations instead of postponing them. Starting the process can allow organizations to explore how to consolidate stacks and improve overall efficiency and costs.
