Perplexity launches on-device AI agent with zero token costs

Perplexity introduces Portable Computer, a local AI agent made with NVIDIA; on-device tasks have zero token costs, and cloud access needs permission.

The new tool, introduced months after Perplexity's earlier agentic product Personal Computer, is aimed at users who want to run AI agents locally. Portable Computer, along with its models and tools, lives entirely on the local device, so user data is not sent to the cloud. Perplexity said this offers greater privacy for sensitive information.

Portable Computer uses small models such as Qwen 3.8 and NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Lightning. Perplexity said these models can handle complex agentic tasks while running on local hardware. The agent also supports web search and advanced reasoning with cutting-edge models, but it will ask for user permission before using cloud-based features.

The company said work handled locally will not incur token costs, which could help users handling high-volume tasks avoid exhausting tokens or paying extra fees.

Portable Computer currently supports NVIDIA's DGX Spark platform and can run Qwen 3.8 or PPLX 27B, a post-trained version of Qwen 3.8. Perplexity said support for Nemotron 3.5 Lightning and NVIDIA RTX GPUs is coming soon. Subscribers to Perplexity Pro or Max can set up Portable Computer on DGX Spark systems starting today.
