Philips puts its AI-assisted Sonicare DiamondClean 9900 Prestige on sale in the US and Europe

The new model undercuts the list price of the previous DiamondClean iteration, which stays on sale at a discount from $429.99, even though Philips has added capabilities to the newer version. It is also $120 cheaper than Dyson's $499 CameraJet smart toothbrush, a competing device that some early buyers have reported problems with, The Verge reported. Philips' brush does not floss for the user.

The 9900's handle carries a touchscreen used to choose among eight cleaning modes and three intensity levels, including gentler settings intended for sensitive teeth or gums. The display also presents what Philips calls a "12-segment mouth map," dividing the mouth into sections that change color to show where the brush's motion sensors judge that brushing has been effective and where a repeat pass is recommended.

A color-changing light ring on the base works with a third-generation AI model and Philips' SenseIQ technology to warn the user when they are pressing too hard while brushing. The toothbrush also adjusts its own vibration intensity in response to the user's technique, which Philips frames as a way to help people brush safely and effectively.

The Verge noted that the toothbrush joins a growing list of devices fitted with built-in displays, a category of products that had functioned without such screens for decades.
