Pixel 11 Android Auto Maps Glitches Add to Google Bug Reports as Readers Pick Galaxy S26 Ultra

Android Authority reports Pixel 11 owners are seeing Google Maps freeze and flicker in Android Auto, while some Pixels hit performance problems after Android 17 QPR1. A reader poll also picks the Galaxy S26 Ultra as the best iPhone 18 Pro alternative.

According to the report, some users see Maps repeatedly flicker and briefly turn into “pixelated black static,” while the YouTube Music panel and navigation overlays remain stable. Google support has escalated at least one report and is contacting affected users for more information. The issue is the latest in a run of Android Auto problems; Android Authority noted that Google recently explained why Maps’ speedometer was disappearing and fixed a long-running Android Auto signal bars issue.

Separately, Android Authority reported on the same day that some Pixel owners have seen worse performance after installing September’s Android 17 QPR1 update. GrapheneOS, the privacy-focused Android project, says it has identified a regression introduced with that update that can cause stutter, lag, freezes and app crashes when memory is under pressure. In more severe cases, affected processes can be terminated after becoming unresponsive, according to GrapheneOS. GrapheneOS has already patched the problem for its own users, but stock Pixel users are still waiting for Google to release a fix.

Android Authority’s review of the Pixel 11 Pro pointed to three persistent problems Google should address for the Pixel 12 Pro. The first is gaming performance. The review said the Pixel 11 Pro’s GPU does not natively support OpenGL ES and uses ANGLE to translate OpenGL ES games to Vulkan, which often leads to microstutters and frame drops in popular titles. The second is battery capacity. The Pixel 11 Pro has a 4,850mAh battery that delivers good endurance, according to the review, but Google has not adopted silicon-carbon battery technology that competitors are using. Android Authority cited Motorola’s Razr Fold with a 6,000mAh battery, the upcoming OnePlus 16 with a 9,000mAh battery, and Samsung’s experiments with silicon-carbon in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8. The third is wired charging. The Pixel 6 Pro launched with 23W charging five years ago, while the Pixel 11 Pro is at 30W and the Pixel 11 Pro XL at 45W. Motorola offers 80W on its flagship Razrs and 60W on the mid-range Motorola Edge (2026), the review said, while OnePlus has pushed faster charging on its recent phones.

Also on Oct. 5, Android Authority published the results of a poll asking readers which Android phone they would buy over the iPhone 18 Pro. With just under 2,300 votes, 61.5% chose the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. The Pixel 11 Pro finished second with 14.8%, the standard Galaxy S26 took 9.1%, and the Motorola Razr Ultra (2026) and Nothing Phone 4a Pro each received around 7%. The poll noted the Galaxy S26 Ultra is $100 more expensive than the iPhone 18 Pro and includes Samsung’s Privacy Display, an extra camera and Galaxy AI features.

Editor's Summary

Google’s Pixel line is drawing fresh scrutiny on several fronts: Pixel 11 owners report Android Auto Maps glitches, GrapheneOS has linked an Android 17 QPR1 regression to lag and freezes, and a review lists gaming, battery and charging gaps for the Pixel 12 Pro. In an Android Authority poll, readers overwhelmingly chose the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra as the best iPhone 18 Pro alternative.
