Pixel 11 Pro Fold Tops Galaxy Z Fold 8 for Durability, ZDNet Says

ZDNet says the Pixel 11 Pro Fold beats the Galaxy Z Fold 8 on durability and dust resistance, making it the more reliable pick.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra received titanium components for the hinge and inner screen, but they still come with an IP48 rating. That means they can keep out larger dirt particles, but not fine sand. The report notes that a quick search on YouTube reveals many Z Fold 8 owners who took their phones to the beach and ended up with a crunchy hinge. The crunch may not cause long-term damage, but it was enough to make the author nervous. While on vacation in Myrtle Beach, he switched to the Pixel 10 Pro XL for the week because the phone's IP68 rating put his mind at ease. He could have used the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which also has IP68, but he did not think of it at the time.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold, which the author recently reviewed, is built to last. It is nearly a millimeter thinner and 20 grams lighter than the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, making it feel similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. It also includes magnetic charging for Qi2.2/MagSafe compatibility and a back glass that Google claims is nearly impossible to crack. That is a significant claim at a time when cracked phone screens are common in public. With full IP68 water and dust resistance, the author says he would have loved taking it to the beach to read on.

The US foldable market now offers three distinct options. The Razr Fold has the biggest battery and arguably the best cameras. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has the most power and the most novel design. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold stands out for durability. The author favors the Pixel because while a big battery or a cool design is nice, it does not matter if the phone breaks. He would rather have a phone that works, and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold gives him that confidence.

He acknowledges that other foldables, such as the Honor Magic V6 sold overseas, already offer IP68 and IP69 ratings, meaning they can handle mud and even a rinse in the dishwasher. Eventually, more foldables will likely match that level of protection, but for now, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is the one the author says he will carry most. The Z Fold 8 may have power and style, but the Pixel's reliability wins out.
