Pixel 11 sign language translation shown working in new hands-on video

The video follows Google’s announcement that the Pixel 11 series can use its front camera to turn ASL into written English. In the hands-on demo, the phone processes signing continuously rather than requiring users to enter text manually. Google says its sign language-to-text model considers hand, arm, torso, head, and facial movements to determine meaning.

For many Deaf people, sign language is a primary language, not simply a slower substitute for typing. The feature is designed to translate ASL into written English so that hearing people can read the communication without the signer having to switch to typed text. Google is expected to expand sign-to-text translation to more Pixel devices and additional languages, according to the report.

The feature currently works on Pixel 11 devices and supports ASL-to-English in select markets. Android Authority noted that Pixel phones already include accessibility tools such as Guided Frame and Live Caption, but sign-to-text removes a communication barrier while allowing users to keep their preferred language. Despite limited availability, the hands-on demo suggests the translation feature can keep up with a user signing in front of the phone, offering another example of Pixel software distinguishing Google’s hardware.
