Pixel 12 Pro Fold may use Apple’s dual UTG display tech for near-creaseless screen, report says
A new report says Google, OPPO and vivo plan to use Apple’s dual ultra-thin-glass display design for next foldables, potentially giving the Pixel 12 Pro Fold a nearly crease-free inner screen.
Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected to launch next week and would be the first phone with this dual UTG structure, The Elec reports. OPPO and vivo are also reportedly preparing the same setup for their future foldable devices.
A dual UTG structure places one layer of ultra-thin glass beneath the OLED panel and another ultra-thin glass layer above it as a cover window. The Elec says this approach is meant to reduce the crease and deformation caused by repeated folding, and to give manufacturers more precise control over panel rigidity and fold-related stress.
The potential adoption comes as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 uses a different method. Samsung’s Flex Titanium structure replaces the lower UTG layer with a titanium alloy film and a titanium plate, an approach the company says also reduces the display crease.
Google released the Pixel 11 Pro Fold last month, and it already had a less obvious crease than previous Pixel foldables. But Android Authority reviewer Paul Jones said in a hands-on video that the Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s crease seemed to develop quickly over a short period. He praised the OPPO Find N6 for a crease he could see only at extreme angles but could not feel. If Apple’s approach proves effective in real-world use, it could be good news for the Pixel 12 Pro Fold, OPPO Find N7 and vivo X Fold 7.
