Pixel Camera 11 adds hidden dial-style quick controls and a new Launch mode

The redesigned controls were first spotted by 9to5Google, and Android Authority confirmed their presence on Pixel 11 units. Previously, the same controls appeared as larger slider bars; now they are cleaner, dial-like controls for Focus, Looks, Exposure, Shadows, White balance, Shutter speed, and ISO.

In Pixel Camera 10.4, Quick access controls appeared as a standalone toggle in the app's settings. With Pixel Camera 11, Quick access has its own submenu where users can customize the placement of the controls. On Pixel 11 devices, Quick access controls are disabled by default. After enabling them in settings, the controls remain hidden until the user taps the viewfinder, at which point they pop up on either side of the display.

Android Authority notes that keeping the controls off-screen by default keeps the camera interface clean, but creates a discoverability problem for unfamiliar users. A prompt within the settings menu explaining that the viewfinder must be tapped would make the feature easier to find and use.

The same update adds a Launch mode that changes the app's default startup mode from Photo to either Video or Magic Capture. This applies to the standard app launch and the double-tap shortcut, reducing steps for users who primarily record video or want both videos and photos with Magic Capture. Magic Capture is a Pixel 11 series-exclusive feature, though Android Authority suggests it will likely come to older Pixels eventually, as could the new Quick access menu and Launch mode.
