Pixel phones are 'boring,' Android Authority says, proposing five changes

An Android Authority commentary says Google's Pixel lineup has become boring due to stalled innovation, suggesting five fixes including unified AI, a stronger processor, better value, wider feature availability, and more meaningful hardware updates.

The report said that while Google has maintained a consistent camera-bar design and a stable software experience in recent years, annual refreshes have brought little meaningful innovation. Skipping a couple of Pixel generations or switching to another brand or a different form factor like a flip phone no longer feels like a big loss, it added.

First, Google should de-fragment its AI tools across Pixel phones. The report noted that numerous AI features have separate branding and distinct interfaces, making them feel like scattered pieces rather than a cohesive system. Gemini Intelligence, already heavily promoted by Google, could have served as the single place to find and control all AI features, but Google has so far fumbled that integration.

Second, the Pixel needs a competitive processor. According to Android Authority, the Tensor G6 tested in the Pixel 11 is only an incremental upgrade over the Tensor G5, with mediocre graphics performance that lags behind Snapdragon and Apple flagship chips. The report said it had similar experience with the Pixel 10 and is again hoping for a bigger jump in the Pixel 12 next year.

Third, the Pixel's value proposition has weakened. The Pixel 11 series is slightly more expensive this year, and the Pixel 11 Pro now comes with lower starting RAM. Historically, Pixels undercut or matched rivals, which drove the A-series' success, but now a customer at a carrier store would only pick a Pixel if they came in specifically for it, the report argued.

Fourth, exclusive AI features should trickle down to older Pixel devices. While reserving features for the newest model may boost sales of the latest phone, it leaves earlier Pixel owners feeling poorly treated, according to the report. It noted that Android updates already land across Pixel lineups simultaneously, making broad software availability one of the biggest draws for Pixels, so extending features to older devices could build loyalty.

Fifth, Pixel hardware changes should be less incremental. The report said the Pixel lineup's visible maturity has come with decelerating growth, and without meaningful design or component changes, even skipping a couple of generations leaves users feeling little difference.
