Pixel users report Bluetooth volume control issues with Android 17 QPR1

Pixel owners report that Bluetooth absolute volume control has stopped working or works only intermittently since Android 17 QPR1, with the cause unknown and no fix announced.

Absolute volume keeps the volume levels of Bluetooth headphones and the device streaming audio to them in sync, so adjusting the volume on either the phone or the headphones changes it on the other as well. When the feature fails, each device holds its own separate level, which can leave earbuds sounding quiet even when the slider on the phone is at maximum.

Reddit user KaneNova posted on the Google Pixel subreddit that absolute volume stopped working after the September update was installed on their Pixel 10. Other users in the same thread said the feature works intermittently on their devices, and that disconnecting and reconnecting the affected audio device can sometimes restore absolute volume control.

What causes the problem is not known, and there is no indication yet that a fix is in development. Android Authority, which reported the complaints, said its writer had not run into the volume issue personally but had also avoided the other problems users have described since the update.

Since Android 17 QPR1 began rolling out, Pixel users have reported a range of other problems, including issues with performance, touch detection and reception. The volume reports follow that pattern of complaints that tend to appear around significant operating system updates.
