Pixel Watch 5 launches missing some features, Pebble Time 2 wins reviewers with its community, and Apple Watch ceramic may return in Series 12.

In a review posted Friday, Engadget said the Pixel Watch 5 is “a fantastic watch that’s missing features at launch” and does just enough to make up for its price increase. The review unit arrived before all features were ready: the workout builder and the blood pressure and insulin resistance trend reports are expected in September. Engadget said it will update the review when those functions go live, and will adjust the score if needed. The review did test Gemini updates, more accurate GPS tracking and faster battery charging.

The Pixel Watch 5 is physically nearly identical to the Pixel Watch 4, with a 320ppi AMOLED display compared with the older model’s “custom” panel. It runs on a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor, a slightly boosted version of the previous chip, and keeps the same IP68 rating, 3,000-nit peak brightness and replaceable screen and battery. Engadget noted discoloration along the edge of the review unit’s peach “canyon” band and said replacement bands cost $50 to $200.

Separately, TechCrunch said the $225 Pebble Time 2 feels like a toy in the best sense, with a color e-paper screen, physical buttons and roughly 21-day battery life. The watch comes in blue, red, silver or black around a stainless steel frame and uses a silicone band. Its always-on display can be backlit with a wrist flick or taps.

Pebble’s comeback was made possible after Google open-sourced the original Pebble operating system in 2025, with help from founder Eric Migicovsky and some ex-Fitbit staff. The original Pebble company had sold 2 million watches and generated $230 million in sales before shutting down; Fitbit kept its servers and app store alive until mid-2018, and then the user community took over, according to TechCrunch. Migicovsky’s new company, Core Devices, has sold more than 25,000 Time 2 watches across 93 countries and expects its third device, the Pebble Round 2, to begin shipping in September.

TechCrunch also described the Pebble app store as full of creative, niche apps made by individual users, from local train schedules to sunscreen reminders, and said the watch already ships with more than 2,120 watch faces and apps.

In a republished hands-on, 9to5Mac revisited the white ceramic Apple Watch Edition from the Series 5, noting that the Series 12 is rumored to include a ceramic option for the first time since the Series 5 was discontinued. The Series 5 brought ceramic back to the Edition collection after it was absent from the Series 4, and added titanium models as well. The ceramic Edition was offered in 40mm and 44mm, priced from $1,299 to $1,749 depending on band. It included a ceramic case, a ceramic back cover, a red accent ring on the Digital Crown and a special Sport band with a ceramic pin, but it dropped the earlier Edition’s bundled Magnetic Charging Dock and material book.
