Playdate Season 3 to Launch October 8 With Eight Games at $39
Panic's Playdate Season 3 launches October 8 at $39 with eight games over four weeks; preorders are open.
Each Playdate season is a curated collection of games for the device, released weekly in a blind-box fashion. For Season 3, the eight titles are Soggy Froggy by Root Bear crew team root; Gloom Gate by satOlite creator LuBu; Houm by fissh studio BuuuuBunnyGames; Sound Mind by Sasquatchers developer Chuck Jordan; HELLEVATOR by ICY DUNGEON's DRD; Bonkhope by Long Puppy maker indiana-jonas; Chance's Lucky Escape 2 by Goloso Games and Julia Minamata; and Cross Words by Ratcheteer developer Shaun Inman.
The showcase gave a closer look at three of the games, which Engadget described as very different experiences. Soggy Froggy is a cartoonish, crank-heavy title about stirring a pot to keep its liquid at the proper temperature for a bathing amphibian. Gloom Gate is an old-school dungeon-crawling RPG with soulslike elements and detailed animations. Houm is an unsettling point-and-click adventure set in a mysterious mansion filled with valuables and existential trauma.
Season 1 is built into every Playdate and includes 24 games. Season 2 costs $39 and features 12 games, along with the Blippo+ cable TV simulator. Season 3 has fewer titles than Season 2 but costs the same amount. Engadget wrote that Playdate games are generally affordable, with high-end prices around $10, and said the $5-per-game average for Season 3 is a good deal. The publication also pointed to developers testing the limits of the black-and-white cranking machine through supported genres and a recent 3D demo by Cristina Ramos.
In addition, the Playdate Catalog Fall Sale will run from November 5 to 19, offering discounts on more than 200 games.
