PlayStation 6 Price Could Top $1,000 as Component Costs Mount, Leaker Says
Leaker says PS6 memory and storage may cost Sony $680, pointing to a $1,000-plus console. Sony has not commented.
The claim came from KeplerL2 on the NeoGAF forums, according to TechRadar. KeplerL2 made the comment in response to another forum member who questioned an earlier prediction that the PlayStation 6’s total bill of materials would reach $960. That prediction dates to July 2026, and TechRadar reported that prices have risen since then, making it possible for the final bill to Sony to exceed $1,000 even before other components are added.
The $680 figure covers only memory and storage, TechRadar said. It does not include the GPU, CPU, motherboard or other parts needed to build the console, leaving open how far the total cost could rise.
Sony has not commented on the possible price of the PlayStation 6, TechRadar reported. The company said in recent months that “As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses,” according to TechRadar. That stance suggests that if the console’s bill of materials reaches $960 or more, the consumer price is likely to land near that level.
TechRadar described KeplerL2 as a well-known leaker in consoles and computing hardware and cited recent claims about console release dates, the next Xbox’s performance and AMD’s version of DLSS 5. TechRadar said that track record gives the leaker some credibility but that every leak should be treated with skepticism until confirmed.
The leak lands amid an AI-driven RAM crisis that has pushed component prices to high levels and made graphics cards and smartphones more expensive, TechRadar reported. The report said costs for the priciest PlayStation components, including memory, storage and the GPU, are far above where they stood when the PlayStation 5 launched and show no sign of slowing; they could worsen over the next year or two.
TechRadar also said Sony is planning to ditch physical discs in the near future, adding another point of uncertainty for PlayStation gamers. For now, the $1,000 figure remains a prediction from an unconfirmed leak, and Sony has not commented on the console’s possible price.
Editor's Summary
A leaker's $680 estimate for PlayStation 6 memory and storage supports earlier predictions that Sony's next console could cost $1,000 or more. Sony has not commented on pricing, and the figures remain unconfirmed. Rising component costs tied to AI demand are central to the forecast.
