Plex Adds Social Discovery Tools to Its Android TV App
Plex is rolling out Discussions, Lists, Reviews, Reactions and Follows to its Android TV app, following a similar release on Apple TV in mid-September. The company says most reactions and watchlist additions already happen on television screens.
The update covers Discussions, Lists, Reviews, Reactions and Follows. Android TV users can now talk about the titles they are watching, create and share lists, rate and review films and shows, post reactions, and follow other users. Plex describes the change as a way for viewers to lean on each other rather than on an algorithm when deciding what to watch next.
The company says the tools are already being used. It claims that 59 percent of reactions and 47 percent of watchlist additions take place on the big screen, the setting where it is now pushing the features.
Plex is presenting the social layer as a point of difference. Most competing streaming and media platforms do not offer comparable social functions, and the company hopes the rollout will help it stand apart from services built mainly around automated recommendations.
The Android TV release follows a rollout on Apple TV in mid-September, bringing the two television apps to feature parity within a few weeks. Alongside the social tools, Plex has moved its primary menu to the left-hand side of the screen.
Separately, the service appears to have closed a long-standing loophole around remote streaming. Android Authority, citing a Reddit post reported by XDA, says remote streaming from a Plex server will require a paid Plex license. Firecore is notifying users that the requirement applies even when the stream is played through third-party apps such as Infuse.
The report did not say when the remote streaming requirement takes effect, nor how many users are affected.
