Plug-in balcony solar panels go on sale in UK for first time
Plug-in balcony solar panels hit UK stores for the first time, helping renters and flat dwellers cut bills with prices from about £400.
Argos will be the first retailer to offer the DIY solar systems, with Amazon, Currys, B&Q and Screwfix expected to follow within weeks, according to The Guardian. The systems, known in Germany as Balkonkraftwerk, or balcony power plant, plug into a standard wall socket to generate solar power from a balcony, terrace, or shed roof.
Prices start from about £400 to £500 depending on capacity. The 800-watt systems are roughly a fifth of the size of a typical rooftop solar setup, so they cannot power a home on their own, but they could save the average household up to £110 a year on electricity bills. Actual savings depend on panel orientation, weather, and whether households can use the electricity while it is being generated, such as by running washing machines during sunny spells.
Each system must be registered with Great Britain’s National Energy System Operator to gauge how the cumulative impact of these panels could cut the need for gas-fired power or imports. Energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said: “Plug-in solar is a simple, affordable way for households to take control of their energy bills and start saving straight away.” Graham Biggart, managing director for Argos, said: “By making this technology more accessible, we’re putting more power in the hands of our customers and helping them explore practical ways to manage energy use at home.”
Not everyone is urging immediate purchases. Emily Seymour, energy editor at consumer group Which?, said such smaller systems generate less electricity than rooftop solar and may not suit every home. She noted that people may need planning permission or building owner consent, and raised safety concerns around older electrical systems, panel mounting, and incorrect use. Joanna O’Loan, a manager at the Energy Saving Trust, said access to clear and reliable information would be essential as the products become widely available.
A separate analysis by technology website ZDNet examined the limits of plug-in solar without battery storage. The article noted that household electricity use peaks in the morning and evening, while solar generation peaks at midday, creating a mismatch. Batteries can store solar power or cheap off-peak electricity for use during pricier peak times, even without solar panels. Using a 3 kWh portable power station charged on an off-peak tariff, the analysis calculated daily savings of roughly $0.30 to $0.60 once charging losses are factored in, before equipment costs.
ZDNet also reported that new hybrid systems combining solar panels and battery storage, such as EcoFlow’s 5,024Wh Stream systems priced around $2,000 plus installation, are gaining attention. The author argued that while pure plug-in solar remains useful as a baseline-power step, the ability to time-shift electricity is critical for larger savings. The new UK legislation allowing plug-in solar sales does not include plug-in batteries, according to The Guardian, meaning households that want storage must buy it separately.
