Polaroid and Pokémon launch limited-edition instant camera collection for 30th anniversary

Polaroid's Pokémon-themed limited-edition cameras, film and accessories go up for preorder Aug. 25 in the US, UK and Canada.

The lineup includes two compact Polaroid Go Gen 3 cameras: one in Pikachu's electric yellow with a lightning-bolt-shaped hand strap, and one in Sylveon's pink, white and blue colors. A larger Polaroid Now Gen 3 is styled after the classic red, white and black Poké Ball. All three cameras have Poké Ball-shaped shutter buttons and matching straps. The Go Gen 3 models are priced at $99.99, while the Now Gen 3 costs $139.99.

Polaroid is also releasing Pokémon-themed instant film. Double packs of Go Color film, with frames decorated with Pikachu or Sylveon, cost $24.99. A pack of larger I-Type film, featuring silhouettes of various Pokémon around the frame, costs $22.99 but includes fewer exposures, according to The Verge. The plastic cards ejected when a new pack is loaded into the camera will also carry Pokémon silhouettes, a design choice intended to make them collectible.

For the Go Gen 3, Poké Ball-themed accessories include a $24.99 camera case, a $14.99 shoulder strap and a $24.99 photo album, all in red-and-white designs. The entire collection is limited edition.

The two outlets covering the announcement gave slightly different release schedules. TechRadar reported a general sale from Oct. 6, while The Verge said a global release is expected to follow on Oct. 5. The Verge noted the collection goes further than Fujifilm's Pokémon collaboration from five years ago with the introduction of Pokémon-printed film frames.
