Proton VPN Releases Native App for Amazon Fire TV Sticks Running Vega OS

Proton VPN has launched a native app for Amazon Fire TV Sticks running Vega OS, joining NordVPN, IPVanish, Surfshark and ExpressVPN in supporting Amazon's Linux-based platform.

The app can be downloaded directly from the smart TV, so users do not need to configure a router manually to secure the device. Amazon's move away from the Android-based Fire OS to Vega OS meant developers had to build new software for the platform, because older Fire Stick applications would not install on the new hardware architecture. That left VPN users without a native option when the next-generation devices first shipped.

Proton says the app lets viewers secure their internet connection, hide their IP address and open streaming libraries that are restricted by region, all from the television. The company has posted download instructions on its support page.

Proton VPN is based in Switzerland and operates a server network spanning 145 countries, including parts of Africa and Asia where TechRadar says other providers tend to have less coverage. The service offers a free plan with limitations, and a premium subscription priced from the equivalent of 2.99 US dollars per month.

Proton is not the first provider to adapt. NordVPN was among the earliest to release a Linux-based VPN app for the platform and set speed and usability benchmarks, according to the report, followed by IPVanish, which brought its simultaneous-connection feature to Vega OS. Surfshark then launched its own native app, and ExpressVPN joined more recently. Consumer choices were severely limited when VPN support first arrived on the next-generation Fire TV Stick.

TechRadar framed Proton's arrival as significant for users who value open-source transparency in their smart home setup. The report also noted that device compatibility matters as much as connection speed when choosing a VPN for streaming, since native apps remove the need for manual router configuration that most households are unlikely to attempt.
