PS5 Emulation Makes Big Strides on PC With SharpEmu, KytyPS5 and AnyPS5

PS5 emulation tools are advancing on PC, with SharpEmu reporting playable games and KytyPS5 listing 134 titles.

SharpEmu was the first of the emulators to show major movement. Ars Technica reports that it advanced from a 'very early alpha stage' in May to a state that can 'load the eboot.bin of real games, execute native CPU instructions, and partially handle GPU-related functionality.' Its most recent release includes 10 tested games that reach a playable state, with six that developer CursedIfElse says are fully playable at 60 fps.

That group includes simple 2D games such as Tetris Forever, but also 3D titles such as Astro Bot and the PS5 Demon's Souls remaster, which are running at playable frame rates. 'SharpEmu has prioritized hardware accuracy from the very beginning, and we're finally starting to see that investment pay off,' CursedIfElse wrote on social media this week. 'It was built completely from scratch, and this is how far we've come.'

KytyPS5, another PS5 emulator, launched its first public version last week, according to Ars Technica. It is a major expansion of the PS4-focused emulator Kyty and, according to its GitHub page, can boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games, including titles built with Unreal Engine 4 or 5, Unity and custom engines.

An extensive compatibility list for KytyPS5 already shows 134 titles with controllable gameplay, though many of those entries still include reports of persistent, game-breaking bugs. YouTube footage is already available showing PS5 titles such as Astro's Playroom and Demon's Souls running fairly capably under the emulator, Ars Technica reports.

AnyPS5 may be the most unusual effort. The project describes itself as a 'tool for automatic executables porting' and works somewhat like Apple's Game Porting Toolkit. It relinks a PS5 game's original x86 game code directly to native executable instructions that can run on a PC, placing it between direct static decompilation of a game's source code and more complete emulation of the entire PS5 environment.
