PS5 Pro Shortage Tightens as GTA 6 Launch Approaches
PS5 Pro supply is constrained through at least 2027 as GTA 6 demand builds, with resale prices far above MSRP.
Playfront reported that Sony has told distribution partners that "temporary market supply constraints and high demand" will continue to limit retailers' stock until next year. The PS5 Pro first went on sale in November 2024 with an upgraded GPU, graphics at 60 frames per second, advanced ray tracing, 2TB of memory and AI-driven upscaling. Nearly two years later, supply constraints and soaring demand have pushed the console's price far above its initial $699.99 MSRP, which is now $200 higher.
Store supplies are dwindling and restocks are limited, allowing resellers to charge hundreds of dollars above the already elevated market price. At Best Buy, one reseller listed a PlayStation 5 Pro for $1,539, according to the report.
GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, ending a 13-year gap between installments of the franchise. With an expansive world and high-end graphics, the game has driven consumers to seek the latest console, while no PC port release date is in sight. Rockstar's extended previews have shown hyper-realistic visuals and what the report describes as the franchise's most expansive gameplay yet.
The supply crunch is not new for PlayStation. In 2020, global chip shortages constrained Sony's PS5 output for more than three years, with customers often waiting months for the console. This time, the AI boom has limited consumer tech manufacturers' access to advanced chips, creating bottlenecks and price increases across the industry. Companies have invested more than $770 billion over the past half decade in American semiconductor production alone, but supplies may take years to rebound given current demand.
Other hardware is affected. The Economist reported that laptop prices have risen 20 percent this year as companies including Apple and Microsoft raise prices to offset component development costs and AI hardware investments. In South Korea, factory-gate prices for DRAM and flash memory have jumped 445 percent and 244 percent, respectively, largely because of AI-driven scarcity.
Sony has used a lottery system in Japan for customers seeking its most advanced console, adding conditions such as minimum gaming times to filter out resellers. The report says such precautions may become necessary if supply continues to lag demand.
It is unclear whether GTA 6 will take full advantage of the PS5 Pro's most advanced features. The game carries a PS5 Pro Enhanced label, which PlayStation uses for titles with improved visuals and performance, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has stated how it will be meaningfully different on the console. Earlier this summer, rumors circulated that the game would support 60 fps on the PS5 Pro. Rockstar executives have continued to say the game would run at 30 fps on both consoles, and footage from Rockstar's official previews has been played on a PlayStation 5 at 30 fps.
Some skeptics say GTA 6 likely will not maintain high framerates on the PS5 Pro because of its scale. The console's 10 percent CPU gains may help the game better render crowds and traffic, but likely will not increase performance in other areas. Gamers may still benefit from the PS5 Pro's enhanced visual effects.
Editor's Summary
Sony's PS5 Pro is facing supply constraints through at least 2027 as demand builds ahead of GTA 6's November 19 release. The shortage is tied to broader AI-driven chip scarcity that has raised prices for memory and laptops, while resellers are listing the console far above MSRP. It remains unclear how much the PS5 Pro will improve GTA 6 performance beyond enhanced visuals.
