PS6 and Xbox Helix Chips Rumored Taped Out as Leaker Claims 40 and 56 TFLOPS
Rumors suggest the PS6 and Xbox Helix chips are taped out, with a leaker claiming 40 TFLOPS for Sony's console and 56 TFLOPS for Microsoft's. The reported specs point to AMD Zen 6 and RDNA 5, while pricing and a pre-2028 launch remain uncertain.
The tipster KeplerL2, whose claims were relayed via VideoCardz, also supplied the performance estimates, TechRadar reported. TFLOPS stands for tera floating-point operations per second, a measure of how many trillions of calculations a processor can perform in one second. The figure offers a rough signal of compute power, but architecture choices and memory bandwidth also shape real-world performance.
For context, TweakTown reports the PS5 delivers 10.28 TFLOPS, the PS5 Pro offers 16.7 TFLOPS typical and 18.05 TFLOPS peak, and the Xbox Series X can hit 12 TFLOPS. If the leaked numbers hold, the Xbox Helix would have a raw-power advantage over the PS6. TechRadar noted that the Xbox Series X had a 20% TFLOPS edge over the PS5 in 2020, yet that did not necessarily translate into better-looking games.
Previous leaks suggest both consoles will be based on AMD Zen 6 CPUs and AMD RDNA 5 GPU architecture, according to TechRadar. There has also been talk of 30GB of RAM inside Sony's console, while no RAM prediction has surfaced for Microsoft's. Direct comparisons with current-generation hardware remain difficult because many other variables will change alongside TFLOPS.
On Reddit, gamers discussed the leaked TFLOPS figures with skepticism, saying they are not guaranteed to convert directly into gaming performance, TechRadar reported. The larger debate appeared to be over price. Some users mentioned an "inevitably massive price hike," while another was prepared to "say goodbye to affordable console hardware" in this generation.
The pricing concern comes as an ongoing shortage of memory chips drives up prices across the board, including in gaming hardware, as seen with the Steam Machine, according to TechRadar. As for timing, experts say a launch before 2028 is unlikely even if the design for the main processor chips has now been finalized. Until then, TechRadar suggested filling the time by exploring everything Grand Theft Auto 6 has to offer.
