The spangram has 11 letters and touches the top of the first column and the bottom of the fourth column. The answers are SWITCH, CHANGEOVER, TRANSITION and PROGRESSION, with FALLEQUINOX as the spangram. TechRadar rated the puzzle Hard and reported a score of one hint. The writer initially thought the theme referred to the change between day and night work shifts, then understood after finding the spangram that the words were connected to the astronomical start of autumn. The previous day's Strands, game #932, had answers NEON, LYCRA, GRUNGE and SCRUNCHIES, with NINETIESTREND as the spangram.

For NYT Connections #1199, the 16 words were THIS, THAT, THE, OTHER, CAFE, PATRON, AGREE, ACCENT, TOUCH, THOSE, ROSE, NEUTRAL, DETAIL, DISAGREE, THESE and FLOURISH. The yellow group, Demonstratives, was THAT, THESE, THIS and THOSE. The green group, Embellishment, was ACCENT, DETAIL, FLOURISH and TOUCH. The blue group, Options on a multiple choice survey, was AGREE, DISAGREE, NEUTRAL and OTHER. The purple group, Beverages with acute accents removed, was CAFE, PATRON, ROSE and THE. TechRadar rated the puzzle Easy and reported a perfect score. The writer said ACCENT, in the green group, may have hinted at the purple group's accent theme and that choosing between THE and THIS in the yellow group was a risk. The previous day's Connections, game #1198, had groups for Email buttons, Ways to attract fish, Chess verbs and Starts of composers' names.

Quordle is one of the original Wordle alternatives and has continued for more than 1,500 games, according to TechRadar. Strands is an NYT word game that followed Wordle and Connections, and Connections is one of several NYT word games that challenges players to group four items sharing something in common. Connections uses difficulty levels that run from green as easy to purple as usually very difficult, and players can make up to four mistakes.
