Radius Relaunches as Meetup.com Alternative, Adds Activities

The creator wrote that the relaunch came “far too long after the original Show HN” and blamed a day job for the delay. Radius started, he said, from frustration with not knowing what was going on around him. The initial plan was to “show all and every type of event” from big to small, but the focus was later narrowed to communities, groups, events, and helping people connect through them.

The first Show HN post received more than 150 comments, which the creator called surprising given the plain Bootstrap UI at the time. He said the comments produced a large amount of useful feedback and feature requests. Since then, he wrote, he has worked through that feedback and additional requests from groups using Radius, and the project now “finally feels ready for a proper relaunch.”

Activities are separate from groups. The creator offered an example: “John is going for a cycle and a coffee in New York at 10am.” People can join the activity and vote for a time that works for them, according to the post.

The creator said he has a number of ideas for where to take Radius next, including open sourcing and federation, but added that those are “for another day.” He also wrote that Radius is built with Ruby on Rails and that he suspects it would have taken two more years to reach this point without Rails.
