Rainbow Six Tactics Director Says Mario + Rabbids Helped Team Understand 'Metrics of Tactics'
Rainbow Six Tactics director Martial Potron says Mario + Rabbids helped the team understand the metrics of tactics, and the turn-based format required a shift from his Ghost Recon habits.
"Mario + Rabbids helped us shape some parts," Potron told TechRadar Gaming. He added that the team chose a turn-based tactics genre instead of the series' first-person style because it felt Rainbow Six's DNA is already "tactical."
Potron also described how working on Rainbow Six Tactics differed from his experience on Ghost Recon. He said some core rules for him as a Ghost Recon developer were to design an experience players would expect, using "smoke and mirrors" in terms of lethality or enemy behaviors to "make the experience cinematographic." The turn-based tactics genre, by contrast, is different. "In tactical, everything is very precise," he said. "It's pure. It's like chess. So we had to change a bit of our mindset to adjust to this philosophy."
Potron called the change "a bit of a paradigm shift for us in terms of habits" and said, "It's 15 years of my habits that I need to shift." Rainbow Six Tactics launches in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, according to TechRadar Gaming.
